What is the Museum of All Things?
The Museum of All Things (or "The MoAT") is a nearly-infinite virtual museum that you can visit for free on your computer! You can find exhibits on millions of topics, from Arts in the Philippines to Zinc deficiency!
The breadth of the museum is made possible by downloading text and images from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. Every exhibit in the museum corresponds to a Wikipedia article. The walls of the exhibit are covered in images and text from the article, and hallways lead out to other exhibits based on the article's links.
Deeply inspired by educational videos that I watched as a kid, and the liminal spaces produced by early CGI, I want to recapture the promise that the internet can be a place of endless learning and exploration.
How can I visit?
In order to visit the Museum of All Things, you must download the museum software to your personal computer (the museum does not run on mobile at this time).
You can download the Museum of All Things on Itch.io!
The Museum of All Things is also available for download on Github
Select the file which matches your system, and run it. The museum also supports VR! If you have a VR headset, you can download the "OpenXR" executable corresponding to your system (The Oculus Quest is not currently supported).
How was the museum developed?
I developed the Museum of All Things in the Godot game engine. I modeled assets for the museum in Blender. Textures used for materials in the museum were taken from AmbientCG which releases their textures under a CC0 License. The museum, logo, and this website use the "Cormorant Garamond" font under the Open Font License.
Images and text which appear in the museum's exhibits are pulled from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
A project like this wouldn't be possible without the contributions of millions of Wikipedia editors, and the free APIs made available by the Wikimedia foundation. If you enjoy my project, I'd highly recommend that you also become a donor to Wikipedia!
Audio for the museum was created by Willow Wolf from Neomoon. Check out her website if you're looking for game audio services!
What are your plans for the museum?
Although the Museum of All Things version 1.0 is released, I plan on continuing to update and improve it in the future. Some features which I would like to add in the future include:
- Multiplayer support
- Greater variety in room theming and layouts
- Support for more media types, like audio and 3d models
- Support for Wikipedia languages aside from English
